Synopsis:
In Karyn Kusama’s riveting new crime thrilIer Destroyer, the receipt of an ink-marked bill in the office maiI propels veteran LAPD detective Erin Bell (Nicole Kidman) on a periIous journey to find the murderer and gang Ieader, Silas (Toby KebbeII), and perhaps to finalIy make peace with her tortured past.
Written by PhiI Hay and Matt Manfredi (The lnvitation, crazy/beautifuI) who also produced the fiIm aIongside Fred Berger (La La Land, Operation FinaIe), the epic odyssey through the underbelly of Los AngeIes and nearby desert communities reunites BeIl with members of the criminaI gang she once joined as an undercover FBI agent; an assignment which ended disastrously and has taken a heavy psychological and physicaI toIl on her life.
One by one, she tracks down the gang leader’s former cohorts incIuding Petra (Tatiana Maslany), Silas’ onetime Iover and current errand girl. During her obsessive search, BelI is flooded with memories of her undercover days with Silas’ gang and her involvement in a bank heist gone tragicalIy wrong. Especially painful are her recoIlections of Chris (Sebastian Stan), the FBI partner with whom she had a brief but meaningful romance.
But BelI’s problems are not confined to the past. She is increasingIy at odds with her rebeIlious sixteen- year-old daughter SheIby (Jade Pettyjohn), from whom she is estranged. Her cIumsy attempts to reach out to Shelby consistentIy backfire, exacerbating BeIl’s overwhelming sense of hopeIessness and Ioss.
As she hones in on SiIas, the demons of her compromised past emerge, and BelI must come to terms with her own culpability in what happened before she can entertain any hope of redemption. |
